ExAM-FAST

Project description

ExAm-Fast (Expanding the Applications of Miniaturized FrActure Specimens for Toughness evaluation) aims to contribute to the development of a Test Bed for toughness characterisation by (i) extending the range of application of miniature toughness specimens and (ii) training and publication of best practice in manufacture and testing of mCT specimens. Mechanical and fractographic measurements will be used to assess whether the lower-temperature testing limit in current standards for fracture testing in the ductile-to-brittle regime can be reduced. A simulation framework based on micromechanical modelling will be combined with mechanical testing to determine how mCT can provide valid toughness data in the ductile regime. Modifications to current standards will be proposed.
