From 29 March to 4 April 2026, the fourth edition of the European School on Nuclear Materials (ESNMS) is taking place at the Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse in Cargèse, Corsica, France. The school is organised by the Energy Division of CEA (France) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and is held as part of the CONNECT-NM partnership.
Established in 2020 within the Joint Programme on Nuclear Materials, ESNMS brings together leading European scientists and early-career researchers in the field of nuclear materials science. The 2026 edition continues this objective, offering a comprehensive programme covering current research and technologies. Over five days, 43 students from 13 countries are joining, building expertise and connections across the next generation of researchers.
The programme addresses topics such as multiscale modelling — from advanced electronic-structure calculation methods to continuum models — alongside state-of-the-art experimental approaches to studying materials. A wide range of nuclear materials is covered, including structural (metallic and ceramic), functional, and fuel materials.
Lectures are delivered by 14 European experts at the forefront of nuclear materials research, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical insights. In addition to lectures, the programme includes case studies addressing current challenges in the field. Participants work in small groups under the guidance of lecturers and present their results to their peers.
